The Lupercalia: an ancient and mysterious love ritual

Long before red roses, chocolate hearts and Valentine's Day cards, the Romans celebrated love as a wild and sacred force .
Every February 15th, during the Lupercalia festival, nature, fertility and passion mingled in an ancient ritual, imbued with mystery and vitality.

Origins and symbols of the Lupercalia

The Lupercale , or Lupercalia , was an ancient Roman festival dedicated to Lupercus , god of fertility and flocks.
It took place in the famous Lupercal cave , at the foot of the Palatine Hill, where, according to legend, the she-wolf nursed Romulus and Remus , founders of Rome.

This ancient Roman celebration symbolized:

  • Purification : Welcoming the new year with energy and vitality
  • Fertility : life force and renewal
  • The impulses of the heart : passion, instinct, and the sacred bond between humans and nature

The Lupercalia was a collective, mystical and symbolic ritual, deeply linked to natural cycles and human vitality.

The Luperci Ritual

The priests called Luperci led the festival.
Walking through the streets with blessed straps, they performed symbolic gestures on the volunteer participants, bringing protection, fertility, and happiness .

Contrary to popular belief, historians confirm that the Lupercalia was a respectful and collective ritual , celebrating vitality and love in its most sacred form.

The Lupercalia in popular culture: Sabrina and modern magic

Even today, the Lupercalia continues to inspire.
In the series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina , an entire episode is dedicated to Lupercalia , the witchy version of Valentine's Day.
Young witches and wizards celebrate love and connection through symbolic rituals and dances, recalling ancient Roman rites and the idea that passion and vitality are mysterious and sacred forces .

This episode perfectly illustrates how an ancient festival can transcend time and nourish our modern imagination.

Why the Lupercalia inspires us today

The Lupercalia reminds us that:

  • Love is a vital, instinctive, and sacred force .
  • The cycles of nature influence our passions and emotions
  • Ancient traditions contain timeless magic and poetry.

It is in this spirit that I imagined the Amadoria sensory ritual , inspired by the Lupercalia: a signature perfume, a whipped butter, a bath salt and a bath bomb, all handmade , in limited edition, for a moment of sensory and poetic magic .
