Mosquito Repellent Soap: Reality or Natural Myth?
🦟 Can you really repel mosquitoes with natural soap?
Summer means the return of picnics, campfires... and mosquitoes. If you're like me, you're probably looking for natural ways to protect yourself from them, without having to cover yourself in chemicals. And you may have already seen handmade soaps advertised as "mosquito repellents."
But… does it really work? Let’s take stock.
✦
🧼 Mosquito repellent soap: between myth and truth
The idea is appealing: a gentle, handmade soap that smells of lemongrass or lemon eucalyptus... and repels mosquitoes in the process.
In theory, it's plausible: some essential oils are known for their repellent properties, such as:
- Lemon eucalyptus
- Lemongrass
- Rose geranium
- True lavender
- Atlas Cedar
- Tea tree
But in practice, it's important to remember that soap is a rinse-off product . Once you get out of the shower, most of the essential oils have disappeared into the water . There may be a slight odor left on the skin, but it is very subtle and temporary .
✦
🔥 Hot saponification: a slightly more effective option?
At Atelier des Mandragores, I work with hot saponification . One of the advantages of this method is that I can add the essential oils after cooking , to preserve their properties.
This makes it possible to obtain a soap:
-
Very gentle on the skin
-
With a more persistent scent
-
Which leaves a light film on the skin, which can retain some essential oils
But even under these conditions, the repellent effect remains limited in time. In general, the odor persists between 15 and 45 minutes after the shower , depending on the heat, activity and formulation.
✦
🧴 The real good reflex: the two-step ritual
Rather than relying entirely on soap, I recommend a simple, natural approach:
-
A preparatory botanical soap with repellent essential oils
-
A body oil or solid anti-mosquito lotion , based on vegetable oils and essential oils which remain on the surface and provide prolonged protection.
It is this combination that really works in a natural approach.

✦
🔸 Neem oil – optional, but recommended:
💡 Tip: Neem oil has a strong herbal odor, but it's a highly mosquito-repellent ingredient. If you find its smell bothersome, you can use a little less, or soften it with a drop of vanilla or benzoin.
✦
🧚 In conclusion
Natural soap can be a great first step , but it's no substitute for a full-fledged repellent . If you want to fully enjoy your summer evenings without getting eaten alive, consider combining your favorite botanical soap with a well-balanced body oil.
🌿 Natural, gentle, simple — and above all, effective.
See you soon my toad!
